Question:

Taking away the soother....?

My son just turned 1. His soother is ALWAYS with him. I have tried taking it away during the day and only giving it to him at bedtime but he's a very fussy little boy and sometimes his soother is the ONLY thing that will distract him enough to calm down. I guess this all began when he was a colicy baby and the soother was definitely needed.

Anyway....I can't decide if I should take away the soother now, when he's still young enough to not really comprehend what mean mommy is doing......Or if I should wait until he is about 2 and IS old enough to somewhat comprehend what's going on.

Any opinions? Suggestions?

  1. I thought about taking my sons away when he was one. He is 21 months now and we have taken it away except for at bedtime. He definitely understands alot better now and I feel that it was a better choice for me to wait until he was older. We told him that he was a big boy and didn't need it anymore. It was rough for a few days but he got used to not having it during the day. Now he gets up in the morning and lays it on his pillow and doesn't touch it until nap time or bedtime.

  2. wait.... most kids will let go on their own. Don't worry about it.

  3. If by soother you mean pacifier or binky, then let him have it til he is atleast 2. Otherwise I have no clue what you mean by soother.

  4. I thought by taking the soother away from my baby would be a hastle as well and by surprise it wasn't.  the way i did it was a little after she turned 1 i was putting her to sleep and i was searching everywhere for her soother and it was no where to be found.  by that time i began to get frustrated so i just layed her down and patted her back to sleep and by surprise she slept the whole night without her soother.  from that day forth she was off the soother with no worries.  they wont know what they are missing when they dont see it.  as long as she saw it she wanted it.  Good Luck!
