Question:

Taking buses in Austria?

I only speaks English, and want to travel in Austria. Is it convenient to take buses to travel between cities in Austria? For example, from Linz to Attersee, then to Salzburg, then to Vienna. How much is that and are there many choices? Would train be cheaper? Is EuroRail a good option?

  1. Use buses for short distance and trains for long distance. Do not expact every bus driver speak English fluent. I think EuroRail is only a good option if you want to travel several countries in Europe. For Austria only it will not be helpful.

  2. I would suggest you take the train for your trip.

From Linz to Attersee is a bit difficult. You need to change in Vöcklamarkt and then go to Attersee (a village located at lake Attersee).

Then going from Attersee to Salzburg you need to change again in Vöcklamarkt.

The train connection from Salzburg to Vienna is very good. There are many connections at almost any time and it's mostly high speed trains.

You can access the schedules at http://fahrplan.oebb.at

unfortunately it's only available in German. If you need help contact me via e-mail (mehdrescher@hotmail.com).

In case you travel a few times by rail it's advisable to buy the VorteilsCard (which gives you a 50% discount and costs approx. € 20 if you are under 26). Then the prices would be:

    Linz-Attersee: 7.90

    Attersee-Salzburg: 5.70

Salzburg-Vienna: 22.10 (for this one I'd suggest you book a seat in advance as it is highly frequented - it only costs a few euros)

I'm not experienced with EuroRail so I can't give you any advise on that....sorry...

    Hope that helped!
