Question:

Taking care of sunflowers

Not much of a gardener, but I have a row of sunflowers at the back of my vegetable garden. The bottom leaves are brown. Should I rip them off, cut them off (where?) or just leave them alone? They're growing so well. Thank you!

  1. there fine to leave on, they wont hurt the plant

  2. The leaves are doing that because the plant is sending it's food to the head to make it bloom. As it blooms you can either watch the birds feed on the seeds which will drop to the ground and produce more plants next year or you can cut the heads off about a foot from the top and hang them upside down for a few days to dry. Then you can bake them or roast them and eat them and enjoy. Good luck.
