Is it illegal to take cigarettes from this country (UK) to France?

  1. from the UK, you can come in france with 5 cartons of cigarettes (= 50 packs = 1000 cigarettes), and you wont need to declare or pay to the customs.

    if you take more, you'll have to pay. in any case its strictly forbidden to take more than 10 cartons (= 100 packs = 2000 cigarettes).

    In general cigarettes are cheaper in France, but not all brands are available. So if you have a special brand, take them with you. The price dif is not as big as it used to be.
