  1. well, my dad used to live in new zealand and it should be cold but not freezing in July June that is when it gets really cold

  2. Have a look at localeye

It is the online guide to Christchurch and Canterbury

    http://www.localeye.info

there is also an events database that lists what's on

    http://www.bethere.co.nz/

Weather forecasters are predicting winter this year to be milder than usual due to La Nena weather patterns ....

  3. It could be quite cool in May at that time, but you might stike it lucky!

For things to do with children......

in Christchurch the Antarctic centre is quite cool....there is a snow room there!! among other things.

Maybe up the gondola....it may be a little scary for them, depending on how they feel about going up a hillside in a little plastic pod...but fantastic views.

you can go to either Hanmer Springs or Maruia Springs ( more "naturally set") which are north of Christchurch and inland...Maruia Springs in on the Lewis Pass road while Hanmer is in a townships. I went to Maruia in July when its colder and it was lovely...the hot pools are great!

Maybe go on the Tranzalpine train ( christchurch to greymouth .....its a few hours, I went agian in July and there was snow....you probably won't get any in May..views are pretty cool.

I love the West Coast....if you are going and hiring a car then there are some great little walks....I love Ship Creek its between Fox Glacier and Haast....its an easy walk that you can take a pushchair on and there is a beach walk and a lovely bush walk.

In Queenstown you can go on the Earnslaw boat for a gentle trip.....

Look at the websites below for some options as well..it dpends on how long, how you are travelling etc..

  4. its gonna be freezing. i went in january, it was cold enough.

  5. It will be cooler especially if you are going far south to Queenstown but it won't be freezing. You should still get some sunshine in May.

Don't miss the west coast, there is a lot to see and do there, it is stunning. I would also suggest doing a kyak trip in Abel Tasman (although not sure about the 11 month old for this one!). And if you are going down as far as milford sound it is definitely worth doing a cruise there.

Here is a great site on some of the best things to do in NZ: http://www.aatravel.co.nz/101-must-dos-f...

And some more specific to the south island to give you some ideas:

    http://www.flaxhaven.com/Pages/whatToDo....

    http://www.luxuryvacationsnz.com/Wine_To...

    http://www.tourism.net.nz/new-zealand/ab...

Enjoy your holiday, the south island is beautiful, you will love it :)

  6. I could narrow it alot down if I knew what part of the South Island you are going to be visiting....

But in Christchurch - see the Christchurch's International Antarctic Centre - http://www.iceberg.co.nz (next to airport)

    Puzzling World - in Wanaka, http://www.puzzlingworld.co.nz http://www.puzzlingworld.co.nz/attractio...

Nelson - a must is Happy Valley Adventures - http://www.happyvalleyadventures.co.nz

Actually instead of me listing a few, see the website 'Kidz Go New Zealand' - a site set up for kids visiting NZ for activities etc... http://www.kidzgo.co.nz

    Have a great trip

  7. If you live on the equator then you might find it freezing!

But it will be much colder in July typically than in May.
