Hi, just wondering if its legal to take information from someones website and put it on mine, but credit all the information to the site i took it from so i am no claiming it as mine, and the same goes for pictures i would take. So is this legal if I credit the site??

i.e. Info from BarakObama.com and putting it on mine but saying at the bottom Credit: http://www.BarackObama.com and claiming no association to him

  1. Too bad you support Obama, but to answer your question, you are fine. As long as you keep citing your references. It's all good bro.

    **edit**

    LOL! Yeah I know, but I just had to throw that one in there when I saw the name 'Obama'. Sorry.

  2. If the pictures or content is copyrighted, I don't think you can do that.

  3. If you are using it as a direct quote you need to put quotations around the information that you are using, then cite the reference.

    When it comes to pictures the copyright is  a bit different, for your purpose you will need to consider if what you are going to use it for is considered as "fair use"

    "...Section 107 contains a list of the various purposes for which the reproduction of a particular work may be considered “fair,” such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Section 107 also sets out four factors to be considered in determining whether or not a particular use is fair:

    the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

    the nature of the copyrighted work;

    amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

    the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

    The distinction between “fair use” and infringement may be unclear and not easily defined. There is no specific number of words, lines, or notes that may safely be taken without permission. Acknowledging the source of the copyrighted material does not substitute for obtaining permission. ..."
