Question:

Taking laptop overseas (from Australia to USA). Most hotels offer 'free' wireless internet access.?

Can someone tell me exactly how this works, ie, do they supply the laptop user with some sort of wireless card to be used in their rooms, or do they mean free wireless at a location other than your room, eg. the lobby? I know it won't show up my normal home page from my ISP, so what does it show up with when you first turn it on somewhere other than home?

I have an adaptor plug for USA already, I don't think I need anything else?

I guess the other options are take my laptop but use dial-up; what cables would I need? OR, leave my laptop home and just use cafes, but then I don't have any of 'my' info that I may need readily accessible.

Will taking my laptop be classed as 2 pieces of carry on luggage?

All answers appreciated.

  1. You get an access code to their wireless service.  Some hotels change it daily, some weekly.  When you sign on, you just enter the access code.  No cables are needed.

Make sure your laptop is dual voltage, or you'll need a step down voltage converter.

For carry on you are allowed one bag and one personal item, which includes a laptop.
