Question:

Taking medications without realizing pregnancy?

A friend of mine recently found out she is pregnant. She has been taking the following medications regularly: Nitrofurantoin, Amitriptyline

and occasionally: Trimebutine, Clonazapam.

She has an appointment to see a doctor, but if anyone could offer some insight as to how bad an effect these medications could have on the pregnancy?

thank you

  1. I understand she is pregnant but how far along is she? That's important to know. Of course these drugs have potential for birth harm, however the gestational period and how long of it she consumed them matters. If she is only 4-6 weeks pregnant. I wouldn't think she has cause for concern.

  2. Drugs that have a negative effective on fetal development are usually drugs that are taken further along in the pregnancy. While the drugs you list have not been tested on pregnant women per se, there is no evidence that they cause harm early in the pregnancy.

I had a similar situation several years ago (not with these drugs but in fact with something known to cause birth defects). The doctor explained fetal development and I felt much better about it. There was never any problem.

  3. u can google the effects and she will just need to tell the doctor and make sure she stopped as soon as she found out . theres no way of knowing until doctors look into it

  4. Hopefully she quit when she found out she was pregnant.  There are really no bad effects with it being this early.  Some medicines are okay, her doctor will tell her which ones.
