Question:

Taking my Betta on a roadtrip?

I'm going away for 4 days this weekend and can't find a fish-sitter. I've taken him on a 3 hour trip before, but I'm going 7 hours this time. I'll be staying there for two days, then driving back home.

I realize that fish live in the ocean and have to deal with waves and hurricanes so it shouldn't be a problem, but I don't want to shock him or anything. Is there a good way to do this or has anyone else taken a fish on a long car trip before?

I absolutely love my fish and just want to make sure I take care of him as best as I can :)

  1. well first of all Bettas dont live in the ocean

they live in rice puddles which is really small

if i were you i wuld live your Betta in a care of a good friend or neighbour for the next 4 days because your Betta will get stressed

  2. Your fish will be much safer and healthier if you leave him home. He will be just fine for a couple of days without food. A healthy fish can live a few weeks without food and still be OK. Granted, you cannot do that often or he will no longer be healthy, but on the occasion that you are going on vacation - he will be just fine.

I would really recommend against bringing him with you - there is a much better chance that he'll die on the trip than there is that he'll die at home in his already set up tank.

Fish are not like dogs - they are not meant for car trips.

  3. 4 days isn't too long for a healthy fish to go without food, just make sure that you partially change the water a day before your intended trip. As soon as you get back from your trip do not feed him too much, give him half of what you usually feed them and after a couple of hours feed him some more, this will help prevent him from gorging.

  4. Put the bowl in something resistant to the vibrations and swaying of driving, blanket or towel.   watch temperature changes and keep  the bowl away from the window.  Don't turn the ac up too high in the car.

  5. Give him a bit of food the day before you leave and change the water the day you leave.  I hope you have him in a big bowl.  If not, put him in a big bowl.  He'll be fine for four days.  Better than if you try to drive seven hours with him in a bag.
