what do you think about the idea of taking my conure outside (on a non rainy day) but im too worried about her flying away (even with clipped wings) so i'd buy a bird harness/leash for her.. what do you think is it mean or would she have fun.. i'd even go for walks with her do you think this is a good idea.. have you done this if so did your bird enjoy the harness... and any tips on getting my bird used to the harness she probaby wont like it since she hates when things touch her back and she might be afraid so yeah how do i make her not... thank you

  1. some people are really agasint the leash. me i believe it depends on the bird. if she likes its, thinks its comfortable, than yes go have fun! it shes streesed or bites at it, no. good luck

  2. My first suggestion is to avoid the harness.  Several people may approve of the harness, but I don't.  Simply because the possibility of the harness hurting the bird is more than I can handle--of a bird tries to fly, it would be best for it to flutter down to the ground with clipped wings, rather than suddenly stopping short and hanging in midair with the harness on.  It may get twisted around the bird's wing, leg, or neck, resulting in broken bones or broken lives, if you get my drift.

All I do is clip my bird's wings.  The primaries on the wings are what enables them to fly--if you clip off an inch on three of the outermost feathers, it should prevent the bird from flying away.  I promise you this--I take my bird out all the time with only clipped wings.  I don't go on walks though, unless she is hanging onto my chest and I have my hands around her to protect her from becoming prey of hawks or cats or any other predator in the area.  Usually I just take her out in my yard, where I can see up, left, right, in front and back without the risk of anything sneaking up on her.  One time I did catch a dog in the yard, so I moved the mere three feet where she was nibbling on some grass, I scooped her up and moved her inside.

My best advice is to just keep her in your sight at all times when you do go outside.  Being on your shoulder will make her a clear target for cats behind you and hawks above you.  When walking, keep an eye behind you and around you, and keep another eye on the sky.  Or have her covered with your hand.  When just sitting outside, keep her within 5 ft of you so you can reach her quickly if danger approaches.  I haven't had any problems yet with this.  Also, don't put her on the grass or on trees if pesticide or fertilizer has been laid down in the past week.

    Hope this helps,

  3. the leash is a good idea, you should set her/him  on a bush (not a tree, they climb) once in a while

  4. If you take your bird ouside just watch out for hawks.  The bright colors on a Conure will surely catch the eye of a hawk.  Even if it is on a harness, a would hawk would definitely injure, and possibly, break your bird's neck.

  5. I've never even heard or thought of that... interesting idea!

If you do, you'll have to take her on very short walks because birds mainly fly instead of walking, so i bet her legs would get tired quickly (not to mention 1 step for a human is at least 10 or 20 for a bird)

  6. my bird loves it he evan puts his harness on by him self i say go for it

  7. I would start slow by placing in a carrier and going out at first. many times birds are afraid of the noises and things flying overhead like hawks. Which can swoop down and take her right off your shoulder or the harness she is walking on. Start slow and see if she likes it and how stressed she gets.
