Question:

Taking oats out of my horses diet?

Right now I'm feeding my horses 1/2 rolled oats and 1/2 Stable Energy from Dumor.. it's a full 3 quart scoop once daily. I've been thinking of taking out the oats all together.. they don't do any hard work so the don't need the extra energy from oats. Would Stable Energy be okay to feed alone? Would you recommend another type of feed?

I have a 5 yr old 15.2HH Standardbred/TN Walker we ride 3-4 times a week.. nothing hard just trails.

and a 1yr old mule gelding- he's only getting 2 quarts instead of 3.

  1. I Think Stable Energy would be fine to feed alone, but I would recomend takeing a little bit out at a time. becuase a fast change in food isnt good for a horse.

  2. Oats aren't really the best food for horses. They aren't in the horses natural diet, horses don't eat them in the wild. Its OK to give your horse oats if he works hard and and does lots of shows and stuff, but not for a horse that's not a hard worker. To horses, your really feeding them sugar as a part of their diet. Its ok to give your horse a handful of oats once in a while but you probably shouldn't give it as there normal diet.

Stable Energy should be fine alone. If you wanted to though, you could find a basic feed like "Alam" to mix into it.

  3. Actually it is not good to mix formulated feeds with something else.  If Stable Energy is a complete feed, it should be just fine.
