Question:

Taking on a rescued love bird - can anyone advise?

Our local RSPCA has a love bird which they believe is a stray, it is not hand tame, they don't know how old it is and the only information they could give me is that he is a chirpy little fellow.

Could someone please advise what the likelyhood is of me being able to tame it sufficiently and if it will be ok on it's own? I am thinking of taking this little fellow on rather than getting a baby - purely to give it a good home.

Thanks

  1. Lots of time is definately the key. I have had great success with single lovebirds, but you have to be willing to give them the attention that another mate would give them. And ABSOLUTELY NO MIRRORS in the cage! If you will be away for more than a few hours I suggest leaving a radio or TV on for noise company. Lovebirds are very social birds and crave attention and things to stimulate the mind. I would suggest having the wings clipped and leaving the cage door open when you are home. This gives the bird the ooportunity to explore it's surroundings. It may take some time, but with patience and perserverence you should be able to help the little guy adjust!

  2. If you have lots of time maybe?? My mom was given a baby love bird that she tried and tried to get tame but never did. It was a mean little bugger!!

    Good Luck
