Question:

Taking on air?

The mare I'm about to buy was raced as a three year old and the lady told me she was sewn up so she wouldn't take on air why she was racing. She also said it would have to be reversed if we wanted to breed her.

What is sewn up and why?

Will it be a problem for any reason?

  1. It's called a caslick...

some mares will 'suck' wind inside their v****a.  Some mares are done because they have a tilted uterus...and when they are bred...they tend to 'slip' the foal.  Others, due to conformation...the a**s is way further back than the v****a...and f***s will 'drip' into the v****a, causing infections.

Anyways...a vet will trim the skin off of each side of the v***a, and sew it together...except for the bottom, so the mare can still urinate.  The raw edges will heal together...like a wound does...when they are sewed touching each other.

To 'undo' it...a vet just takes a pair of scissors, and cuts right up the scar...and nature will heal the v****a in the normal way.  Sounds horrible...but when I saw it done...the mare barely flinched.

Shouldn't be any problems...but if she is exposed to a stallion anywhere...he can hurt her by trying to breed her, when her 'opening' is not large enough.  He'll tear her.  I would prefer to undo it and have it 'natural.'  Even if I wasn't breeding...but that's just me.
