Taking pictures of indy cars at Infineon with a Nikon d60?

I am going to the race at infineon this sunday and would like any tips or pointers you have. These are really fast cars so I know I need a fast shutter speed but what else should i know? 10 pts best answer These are IRL cars

  1. It's got a "Sports" mode. Use it. And a zoom lens would help, too.


  2. Practice panning so you can get the cars dead still and the background showing the blurr of movement if you don't do this try to fill the frame with the car. The track and walls are not very interesting subject matter

    You'll need a 200mm lens at minimum, and 300mm or more is better VR is a great help

    Shoot the fastest shutter speed you can for the track and a slower one for the pits for more depth of field . Remember 1/3 of the depth of field will be in front of your focus point and about 2/3 behind. I know it sounds like a balancing act and it is. If you need the depth of field you may want to anticipate where the car will be and prefocus on that part of the track releasing the shutter when first comes into view. A good place for this may be in a turn where they have to slow a little.

    Some races have special tickets for photographers that allow you access to the pits and trackside.

    Tripods aren't great for this but a monopod works well when you are not panning

    If your camera lets you shoot multiple frames per second set it to do that and take lots of photos.
