Question:

Taking pictures without flash (Nikon D40)

I'm wondering how I can take pictures without the flash with my Nikon D40 and still have them be clear....not blurry. I've seen this done with similar cameras. Any idea what the settings should be on? Any websites that talk about this? Advice would be appreciated. I just got my camera about a month ago, so I'm still learning how to use it.

  1. You have to have plenty of light available or use a tripod. I have a D60 and it takes great pictures without flash but it needs to have needs things.

  2. The D40 will give you clear images as high as ISO 1600. The 18-55 kit lens is very sharp at all apertures so be sure to hold the camera steady to avoid blur. The setting to be on is the white letter P, program. A is aperture priority, S shutter priority and M manual. Check out Ken Rockwell.com He devotes an entire page to the D40 and also give you tips for camera settings.

  3. A tripod is probably the easiest solution to getting rid of shaky photos.  You might also try increasing the ISO setting on the camera.  In "normal" daylight conditions, you might shoot at ISO 100 or 200.  But in low light situations, you might increase the ISO setting to 1600 or 3200 to compensate for the lack of ambient light.  The trade-off is that, as you increase the ISO setting, you also increase the amount of digital "noise" or artifacts in the photograph.
