What about a power converter. Is 110v available in three star hotels?

I went on CIE tour to Ireland aout 10 years ago, some bread and breakfast's have 100v adapters installed, others dont.

Safest bet is to get an entire set of european adapters. You can get one from Belkin at Target for about $25

Short answer yes.  Here is why.

You can't guarantee you will be in B&B or hotels with US plugs.  Secondly, look at the rating of your wife's hair dryer.

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT.

If it states that it's rated for 100-240V and 50/60 Hz (it's usually marked in the handle on the rating) then all you need is to bring an adapter.

It it doesn't state the volts up to 240 and the Hz having both cycle capabilities - you need a transformer or power converter.  Ireland uses 240V and 50Hz.

My experience is stating that you will need a converter for I don't recall companies making them to have full capability.  Here's the problem.  If you only get an adapter it will fry the motor due to the phase difference (US uses 110V and 60Hz) and from experience your wife will complain that the power is not strong enough and will end up getting upset at you for not knowing it was going to fry the motor of her favourite hair dryer.

Bottom line, read the label and make sure you get the appropriate device in order to keep both of you happy.

Yea the first guy is right. Ireland uses 220v as the standard and the plugs are different in shape as well. They have rectangular shaped prongs on them. Anyway you will need to get a plug adaptor as well as a portable 110v-220v power transformer.

We have 220 v here in Ireland. You can buy a European adapter in any airport. However, most hotels either have a hairdryer in the room or would supply you with an adaptor (unless you are staying in very basic hotels).

We have a lot of rain so if your wife is hair proud get her to bring a rain hat!
