Question:

Taking time off after track season ends.. and a twisted ankle?

I have two questions. I'm a fourteen year old boy, and I've one track meet left. It's the most competitive meet of the season, this coming week. I run the 800M and the 1600M.

Question one: After track season ends, how long should I take off from running? Could I try bike riding once every few days of that time off to reduce any strength lost from the time taken off from running?

Question two: Yesterday night, I twisted my ankle in soccer practice. It hurt to walk on it a little, but five minutes later, I was sitting for 20-30 minutes in the car going to different soccer game. After that game, it hurt a bit more to walk on my ankle. In the morning, it hurt about the same to walk. The more I walked, though, the less it hurt to walk. I later on had a soccer game, where my ankle didn't really hurt. However, after I got out of the car after the soccer game, it hurt kind of a lot to walk. I went inside, and ate lunch. Later on, I went outside to play a little basketball, as I could walk

  1. Questions one is not as important as what is going on in questions 2 so I am going to answer questions 2 first:

2.) That doesn't sound good at all. You need to take a break and go see a doctor. I got the below article from the website at the bottom of this page.

"Subluxation occurs when one or both tendons have slipped out of their normal position. In some cases, subluxation is due to a condition in which a person is born with a variation in the shape of the bone or muscle. In other cases, subluxation occurs following trauma, such as an ankle sprain. Damage or injury to the tissues that stabilize the tendons (retinaculum) can lead to chronic tendon subluxation. The symptoms of subluxation may include:

A snapping feeling of the tendon around the ankle bone.

Sporadic pain behind the outside ankle bone.

    Ankle instability or weakness.

Early treatment of a subluxation is critical, since a tendon that continues to sublux (move out of position) is more likely to tear or rupture. Therefore, if you feel the characteristic snapping, see a foot and ankle surgeon immediately."

I hope that isn't the problem but I have had it before but in your additional comments you had mentioned a popping and I had the subluxation and that had a popping in my ankle.

    Now for question 1:

1.) Biking is a great alternative especially for a lot of injuries unfortunety the ankle is not one of them. If at all possible get to a pool a go swimming or do some aqua jogging. I would do that or take off about 2 weeks to give your ankle a chance to heal. Even though it will start to feel better on occasion that doesn't mean it is better so just give it some time and go see a Dr.

I hate to be such a downer but I don't like runners being hurt. Good luck

  2. 1. yea u should do a bit riding but not that much, its not good to do massive workouts. just do a bit training.

    2. u should stop doing sports if ur in pain, before u know it u will be out for the whole season since u didn't stop workin out. give it a week or so to heal or rap it with something so it wont be as bad

  3. Dude, Im 14  too and i just finished my track season (I was on distance 800 1600, and 400) by hurting my foot playing soccer!  This is terrible, isn't it!

1)keep runnin especially if you're going to be running xc. stay in good shape.

2)I honestly don't know what  to say about that, go see a doctor r something.
