  1. Instead of negative tactics like time-out, sad chair, etc ... try rewards chart like using stars, stamps or stickers or even prizes like candy. However, if you really want to encourage and discipline children, give them genuine praise.

If this isn't helping, identify possible problems before they happen. If you know two children will always argue, seat them away from each other. And most important, keep your lessons short. Break your activities in several 5 to 10-minute activities because children have short attention spans.

  2. I would say to keep children on task is very important. Making sure they always have an activity will keep them from getting in trouble. A great way to do this is to have different "activity tables", such as a coloring table, a "sound table" (where children listen to sounds and try to guess what the sound is) a writing table, etc etc. Encourage the children to stay on task, however, giving a child more than 2 warnings can actually be hurtful to them. It may teach them that they can get away with naughty behavior. In a large classroom, there are tables where if a child is acting up, he is told to sit and work on a special activity, without his friends but under the supervision of a teacher. This isnt "time-out" where a child is tod to be inactive, but it is still a punishment.
