Question:

Taking up ground?

As a hardcore golfer, me and none of my other friends take up dirt when we use our irons. Should we be doing this because all the pros chunk every shot with their irons.

  1. Pro golfers usually do not CHUNK shots. They do the proper sequence in their iron swings, that being ball, turf in that order.By hitting the lower third of the ball  on the club face during the downswing, the ball gets  driven up the face, imparting spin. The deeper the angle of the club face  the more spin can be imparted. The better players try to hold backspin to a minimum. Shallow divots with long irons and slightly deeper divots with the short irons are the goals both to keep the ball on line with the minimum loss of power.

  2. This is part of golf, if you hit the ball more cleanly like with out your club hitting the ground too much, this wouldn't happen, but I think almost everyone does this some what.

  3. pros hit the ground after the ball, they pinch the club right in behind the ball and this puts backspin on the ball, if your hitting the ground on accident its because your wrists are unhinging too early and the club extends into the ground, the wrists should stay ****** through impact

  4. its only natural that during that part of your swing you hit the ground and chunks fly but its not neccesary

  5. Golf Pro's are a different beast to your average golfer so don't try and compare yourself. They take these divots AFTER they have struck the ball, this is why they can spin the ball so well, most amateurs strike the ground BEFORE the ball.

The reason you are taking a divot is because you are striking the ground as well as the ball (I know it seems the obvious answer), if you are only doing this with your Long distance clubs (Driver / 3 Wood / Rescue / 3 / 4 / 5 irons) then your angle of attack is too steep for these clubs, so have a look at your swing.

However if you are only doing this with (6 / 7 / 8 / 9 / Wedges) then your angle is fine, you should be attack the ball with a slightly more aggresive swing as this is what imparts backspin on the ball.

    REMEMBER: -

Driver to 6 Iron - Divot = BAD

7 Iron to Wedge - Divot = GOOD

Regarding your friends, don't worry, every golfer has a different swing.
