  1. If you are moving permanently to Brasil, you would have to stay with the car for 36 months, and the documents will be retained with the IRS for that period. If you decide to sell the car before the 36 months is over you have to pay all the import taxes (around 200 of original value).

The process of bringing an automobile as part of your luggage is not an easy one. There are quite a few rules that have to be observed. A few of them are:

The car must not be over 24 months old.

It must be completely payed for.

All documentation (Import License/Luggage List) has to be approved by the local Brazilian Consulate prior to shipment to Brasil.

If you are moving temporarily to Brasil, you may bring your automobile on a temporary import permit, and you will not be able to sell the car. The car will have to return to origin after the permit expires.

The above will prevent you from paying around $200 plus taxes and importing fees to have the privilege of bringing your own car into the country.

If you have a lot of money to spend simply pay all the taxes and avoid the hassle, if that's not the case, buy a car in Brasil.

For your knowledge Brasil is the largest automobile manufacturer of South America. For locally made new cars prices range from US$20000,00 up to US$85000,00. For imported models price range from US$65000,00 all the way to above US $1 million; it's all a question of how much you have and want to spend.
