Japan’s Takuma Ueda has defeated Wing Ki Wong of Hong Kong in the Men’s singles round-of-16 in the India Open Super Series 2011, held in New Delhi, on Thursday, April 28.
Takuma worked really hard for three sets of 56 minutes to get rid of Wing Ki, who toppled Sai Praneeth B. of India in the first round of the Championship. In the quarter-final, Takuma will be up against compatriot, Sho Sasaki, or Peter Hoeg Gade of Denmark.
In the start of the first set, Takuma remained in dominant position by remaining ahead of his opponent. At the interval, the Japanese was leading by a slight difference of 11-9. After the break, Wing Ki played positively and levelled the score at 15-15.
Both shuttlers were playing aggressively to keep the bird low from the net. It was Takuma who was successful in the end and won the set, with a 21-19 margin in 20 minutes.
In the second set, Wing Ki kept his speed high from the start and managed to build a reasonable lead of 11-8 in the first half. After the one-minute break, he built more pressure on his opponent by playing an attacking game. Takuma failed to break the momentum
of Wing Ki and lost the second set by a slight margin of 18-21, in 18 minutes.
Takuma changed his game plan in the third set and started to play strong pushes in the middle of the court. His strategy worked well as Wing Ki failed to find any opportunity to execute his powerful smashes. At the end of the opening half of the third set,
Takuma was leading the game with an 11-7 margin.
After the 60-second rest, the Japanese continued playing positive badminton and never lost his control over the rallies at any stage of the game. Wing Ki tried hard to bridge the big gap of points, but failed as Takuma was quicker in picking the bird from
all corners of the court.
The Japanese finished the third set with a reasonable margin of 21-16, in 19 minutes. The ending score of this three-set battle was 21-19, 18-21 and 21-16.
