Talent evaluators taken aback as New York Mets obtain catching prospects from Toronto Blue Jays-MLB
The experts have expressed their surprise on the trade deal between the Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Mets.
They believe the cost for the Blue Jays of losing their top catching prospects is huge.
Even as R.A Dickey, the Cy Young winner in the last season, joins their rotation, the vacuum left in their catching department will take a long time before it is filled.
Travis d'Arnaud has been performing consistently in the Minors. Apart from being a catcher, he is a powerful hitter.
By all accounts, the Blue Jays have made a compromise on the future. They have focused more on the short term gains.
Earlier the Blue Jays agreed to a trade deal with the Miami Marlins, which ensured them quality players.
Their offseason moves have brought them on the forefront before the beginning of the next season. The experts have started considering them as the post-season contender for 2013.
The Blue Jays and the Los Angeles Dodgers are the two teams that introduced drastic changes on their roster since the conclusion of the 2012 season.
While the former took the route of trading players, the latter expended money in the market and acquired stars in this way.
Certainly, both these clubs are ideally poised to do something remarkable in the upcoming season. They have best talent of the game.
At-least as far as resources are concerned, they do not have much to worry about.
As far as the Mets are concerned, they can take heart from the fact that talent evaluators consider exclusion of prospects from the Blue Jays as an unpleasant event for Toronto.
The Mets can be assured that they have attained something in exchange for Dickey that the experts rate highly.
One of the American League officials finds it hard to understand the logic behind sending the prospects of such calibre to any team by the Blue Jays.
"I can't believe [Anthopoulos is] thinking about doing this," one AL official.
The Mets will be looking to move on now.
Instead of repenting the absence of Dickey, they will be better off thinking on ways to utilise the existing talent on the roster and put up improved performance in the next season.
