Tamara Curovic beats Prarthana Thombare in the 1st round – LIC ITF Women's Tennis Championships 2011
17-year-old local player, Prarthana Thombare tested her Serbian opponent, Tamara Curovic, before bowing down after an enthralling three-setter battle that lasted for an hour and thirty minutes. The first round encounter of LIC
ITF Women's Tennis Championships 2011 was contested in Pune, India on Monday, 12th December. The local teenager tried her best but couldn’t complete her comeback and lost with a cumulative score of 2-6, 7-6(5), 0-6.
Indian hasn’t won any of her professional tennis matches and she was up against yet another challenging task. Serbian over ruled any expectations of an upset in the first set but she was forced to play the third set courtesy some
outstanding display of all round shots from the local teenager.
First set was completely dominated by the visitor that seemed to have blown her counterparts confidence with some outstanding display. She started off with couple of aces and broke twice in succession to take 4-0 lead upfront.
Indian was completely down and out and could only secure the next two games on her serves to make the score a bit respectable. Serbian continued her onslaught in the second set as well and took the score to 3-0 before a majestic
comeback saw the Indian level the score at 3-3.
Both players had won single breaks until that score line and they exchanged two more breaks to push the score to 4-4; no more drama was seen and score went on to 5-5. A slight hesitant display from the Serbian saw him on the verge
of losing the break before she bounced back and held her serve; score moved to 6-6, hence, a tie-breaker was enforced.
Teenager showed great confidence by rocking her opponent in the last moments of the set when she smashed a volley straight to the corner of the court to register her first set win in the match. Crowd was excited to see such a talented
youngster and wanted her to continue her performance but her body was completely exhausted from the length of the match.
In the third set, Serbian used her guile and stamina to overshadow the promising youngster. She won each game of the set that included three breaks and five aces. An emphatic first and second serve success rate helped the visitor
to move into the second round of the tournament.
Tamara Curovic locks horns with the winner of the match between seventh seed Sabina Sharipova and Miki Miyamura in the second round.
