Tamarine Tanasugarn - A look at Japan Open Champion's performance this season
Born on 24 May 1977 in Los Angeles, Tamarine Tanasugarn is a professional tennis player representing Thailand. The right hander turned professional back in 1994 and achieved her career highest ranking so far of number nineteen in 2002.
The thirty three year old Tamarine has won a total of three singles' trophies in her career so far. She was also a doubles partner with the Russian Maria Sharapova for some time and captured two doubles' crowns in 2003.
Tamarine has captured five doubles trophies while her highest doubles ranking was world number fifteen, which the Thai player had achieved in 2004.
Teamed up with Liezel Huber, Tamarine successfully made her way into the quarter-final round of that year’s final major, the 2004 U.S. Open. Her biggest career success so far came in 2008 when she registered her name as the first Thai tennis contender on
the WTA tour to make her way into the final eight in a major event.
The Bangkok resident has defeated a couple of good names on the tour including the former as well as current number one players such as Amelie Mauresmo, Jelena Jankovic, Jennifer Capriati and Dinara Safina. She also knocked down an Australian Open and French
Open winner, Mary Pierce earlier in her career.
The player is also famous as a grass court expert, having reached the fourth round at Wimbledon on six occasions. She also reached the final eight at the All England Club back in 2008.
The 1.65 meters tall has uptil now advanced into three grass court finals on the tour including the Ordina Open in 2008 and next year as well as the Birmingham competition in 2000.
As far as her performance in 2010 is concerned, the professional tennis player from Thailand started the season by competing at the Australian Open in Melbourne. She triumphed in her opening round clash with a two-setter victory over Sesil Karatantcheva.
The final match score was 6–1, 7–6. In her next round match, Tanasugarn however was thrashed out at the hands of her Belgian tennis opponent, Kim Clijsters in straight sets.
Next at 2010 PTT Pattaya Open, Tanasugarn made her way into the final after getting the better of Alla Kudryavtseva, Sabine Lisicki, Anna Chakvetadze as well as Sesil Karatantcheva. She at last was defeated in the title battle at the hands of top seed and
last year’s winner, Vera Zvonareva of Russia in two sets.
Tanasugarn along with her Kiwi partner, Marina Erakovic then captured the 2010 PTT Pattaya Open doubles crown, beating Ksenia Pervak and Anna Chakvetadze in two sets.The final match score was 7–5, 6–1.
Her next stop was at the 2010 Malaysian Open in Kuala Lumpur where she was defeated by the seventh seed, Magdalena Rybarikova in the opening round. The final match score was 5–7, 3–6.
At the 2010 French Open, the world number sixty two couldn’t even win her first round clash as she was toppled by Daniela Hantuchova in straight sets.
However, recently at the 2010 Japan Open Women’s tennis tournament, she got the better of Marion Bartoli to reach the title battle where she eventually surpassed her forty year old foe, Kimiko Date Krumm to lift the title in Osaka.
