Tamarine Tanasugarn battles past Cagla Buyukakcay in round two – Royal Indian Open 2012
Eighth seeded Thai contestant, Tamarine Tanasugarn, had to dig deep in three sets before completing her second round victory over the unseeded Turk, Cagla Buyukakcay, at the Royal Indian Open. She dropped the opening set early in the match but came back strongly to reel off the following two sets, settling the score line to 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.
It was an evenly contested matchup, with both players coming hard at each other. Tanasugarn dominated the initial moments, breaking her opponent in the very first game to lead 2-0 right away. An exchange of break points in the fifth and sixth games was followed by another cracking strike from Buyukakcay in the eighth game, levelling the score line to 4-4. She nailed another crucial break of serve in the 10th game and sealed the opening set at 6-4.
Action got even intense in the following set as Tanasugarn strived hard for a comeback in the contest. A series of break points was ignited and five successive breakthroughs from both sides took the scores to 5-1 in favour of the Thai contender. Tanasugarn registered her fourth break point of the set to take a 6-3 lead.
The decider took off in a conventional fashion, as both players held their respective serves in the opening seven games. Tanasugarn nudged forward in the eighth to post a 5-3 lead and comprehensively served out of the match to earn a place in the quarter-finals.
Tanasugarn didn’t display her best tennis in the Wednesday’s matchup and lagged behind the Turk opponent in many segments of the game. She coughed a number of faults in the matchup but the only deciding factor between the two competitors proved to be the number of break points scored. Buyukakcay cashed in five out of her nine break opportunities in the matchup, whilst the eighth seeded Thai came up with seven out of 11 cracking breaks of serve to get the better of her opponent. A total of 186 points were played in the matchup, with Buyukakcay winning 92 and Tanasugarn barely surpassing her with 94 points in the pocket.
Tanasugarn will face the third seed Croatian beauty, Donna Vekic, in the round of eight.
