Tamarine Tanasugarn defeats Nicole Gibbs in the second round – Dunlop World Challenger 2012 CH
Fifth seeded, Tamarine Tanasugarn, outmuscled the American professional, Nicole Gibbs, in the second round of the 2012 Dunlop World Challenge tennis tournament, held at the hard courts of Toyota, Japan. The Thai challenger wrapped
her remarkable three-set win at 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in approximately one hour and 40 minutes on the eve of Thursday.
The Thai veteran, Tanasugarn, started a reasonable start of the opener and both the challengers held their serves with a strong resolve to bag home the lead. She confidently drew the first lead displaying her greater experience.
The score line squared down three times and the Thai senior completely lost her lead towards the end. The American junior jumped forward and received a critical break in the ninth game when she cashed on her lone break chance. Gibbs took a flying start to
end and concluded the initial set with a shocking 6-4 lead.
The world number 234, Gibbs, thundered two aces with a reasonable first serve precision of 62 percent. She was able to secure 18 of 26 first and eight of 16 second serve points. The Thai contender secured 58 percent first serve
accuracy, with 11 of 15 first and similarly eight of 11 second serve points.
In the second set, the right-hander Thai broke her rival’s initial serve in order to gain some early advantage. The 18-year-old American professional’s confidence completely smashed, as she was unable to pocket away even a single
game for the first five games. Tanasugarn took advantage of the situation and completely overpowered the situation. She dusted away her opponent’s feasible attempts to take over the equalizer and quickly secured the lead, terminating it with a 6-2 lead.
Ranked 133rd in the WTA Rankings, Tanasugarn, entered the final set with more passion and broke his rival’s initial serve. She eagerly battled through to stay alive in the competition. The American participant was unable
to turn the tables and her strength died down eventually. The Thai senior received her long awaited win in the sixth game and emerged to the frontline with a bread stick.
The 35-year-old, Tanasugarn, received 60 percent initial serve precision with 12 of 15 first and five of 10 second serve points. She snatched away two of three break points and his rival was unable to take even a single of the
two presented. Gibbs displayed her zeal for the sport by presenting a better initial serve precision of 64 percent, attaining seven of 14 first but just three of eight second serve points in response.
