Tamarine Tanasugarn downs Yaroslava Shvedova in the first round – HP Japan Women’s Open 2012
Wild card entrant, Tamarine Tanasugarn, gave straight sets shocker to the higher ranked, Yaroslava Shvedova, in the first round of the HP Japan Women’s Open held at the hard courts of Osaka. The Thai professional summed up her
6-3, 6-2 win in nearly one hour and 15 minutes.
Previously, the duo encountered each other at the first round of the Hansol Korean Open 2011 in Seoul. Surprisingly, the Kazakh, Shvedova, consolidated her 6-2, 6-0 win in the first round. Tanasugarn confidently stepped on the
hard courts of Japan to avenge her former loss.
The fifth seeded, Shvedova, displayed an average start of the opening set and was unable to prevail over her challenger. She held her initial serve and immediately levelled the score line for the first time to 2-all in the fourth
game. Nevertheless, the Thai professional responded back by firing classic forehands and demolished her challenger’s confidence. She cashed her breakthrough in the sixth game and took a lead in the series by a 4-2 score. She proved to be so powerful that she
did not give her opponent a single chance to dominate; eventually concluding the set with a 6-3 score.
Ranked 133rd in the WTA Rankings, Tanasugarn broke his competitor’s serve in the subsequent set and adopted a very proactive approach. She nudged forward and clinched the initial two games, stamping a 2-love lead in
the second game. Despite of her lower rank, the Thai professional boldly drew the first blood and without facing any hindrance and stamped his unexpected 4-1 lead after the fifth game. This move demoralized Shvedova, and she become completely dormant. The
Thai veteran took a flying start to stamp her 6-2 win.
Both players equally fired each other with three aces and but the world number 28 Kazakh had a relatively improved initial serve of 73 percent, converting 20 of 29 first and four of 11 second serve points. On the other hand, she
lost the front line because she was unable to secure not even a single break point offered to her and her opponent secured two of five. The 35-year-old Thai manifested 63 percent initial serve with 28 of 38 points
