Tamarine Tanasugarn downs the injury-stricken Galina Voskoboeva in the first round–Pattaya Open 2012
Local star, Tamarine Tanasugarn, earned a 6-3, 4-2 retirement victory over the sixth seed, Galina Voskoboeva, at the PTT Pattaya Open 2012 on Tuesday. The Kazakh was trailing in this match when she suffered severe pain, eventually retiring from the opening
round at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International event held in Pattaya City, Thailand.
The 34-year-old displayed her best tennis to oust the seed in an hour and eight minutes battle. She was leading 6-3, 4-2 when her opponent suffered severe pain and was forced to retire. After earning this success, Tanasugarn not only levelled the head-to-head
series by 1-1 against the Kazakh but also advanced into the second round at this tournament.
Tanasugarn assertively stepped on the hard courts at the Dusit Thani hotel and got the desiderated break in the third game to go 2-1 up. Regardless of losing her serve in the following game, she unleashed her skills towards the end of the set and wiped out
the last four games in a row.
The Thai brushed off two out of three breakpoints she came across through her tremendous defensive skills and converted three out of four break opportunities to her advantage. She also formulated a better first serve share of 76 percent and impressively
clicked 12 out of 19 points on it.
Ranked 94th in the WTA Premier rankings, Tanasugarn carried her winning ways into the following set and smoothly held her serve in the opening game. The Thai then continued bagging remaining serves until she got the breakthrough in the sixth game.
After this, Voskoboeva couldn’t move as picked up an injury during the match, subsequently retiring from the match.
As a result, the unseeded Thai advanced into the round of 16 at this hard court event. She will next face the Taiwanese qualifier, Kai-Chen Chang, who crushed Greece’s Eleni Daniilidou with a breadstick to set-up this clash. The Taiwanese lost her serve
three times but capitalised on six out of 14 break chances, ultimately sealing the deal with a 7-5, 6-1 score line in their first face-to-face. World number 110 took full advantage of the Greek’s 10 double faults and magnificently registered 25 out of 36 points
on her first serve.
