Tamarine Tanasugarn flabbergasted eighth seeded Christina McHale in the opening round of the HP Japan Open 2011. After battling it out for a lengthy two hours and three minutes on outdoor hard courts of the Utsubo Tennis Center in
Osaka, Japan, Thai Tanasugarn won the match in straight sets of 6-3, 7-5 against the American underdog McHale on Monday the 10th of October 2011.
Commencing the initial round of the match was McHale, who accomplished to win her service game and she then capitalized on a mini break in the second game to reel of straight two games over her adversary. However, Tanasugarn was
not going to let her adversary get away with the lead and in the third game she broke McHale and as she held serve in the fourth, the score was brought to a tie at 2-2.
The score progressed on even terms at 3-3 as they broke each other back-to-back by the end of the sixth game. During the last three games, Tanasugarn shifted a notch higher in her performance and produced her agame by utilizing
the break-serve-break method; she clogged the opening set with a deftly 6-3 victory of the opening set.   
The second set was initiated by Tanasugarn and although, she was broken in the first game, she quickly broke back immediately in the following game to level the scoreboard at 1-1 by the end of the first two games. The head-to-head
run again carried well into the set as the players matched a blow for a blow. The score levelled at 2-2 as the players held serve in the following two games. The players broke each other back to back again in the sixth and seventh game and eventually the score
was again brought to a tie at 4-4 by the end of the eighth game.
By the end of the tenth game the scoreboard had rounded off at 5-5 as the players won on alternate serves. In the last two games, Tanasugarn held serve in the eleventh and the set could’ve been pushed into a tiebreaker however,
McHale’s backhand shot went wayward and she erred endorsing the set and the match to Tanasugarn, who was able to reserve a spot in the second round of the event.
