I'm planning to buy a cockatiel.

I asked someone to handfeed and tame it for me. (coz i can't for some reason)

Once it's tame, will it also be tame to me?

  1. yes ..... a bird if socialized properly  can be tame with anyone make sure you trust the person who is handfeeding

  2. like any animal, it will test you at first. it may try to bite or give warning nibbles if you aren't confident with it. just remember, don't be timid and act with confidence. the bird will know if you are even slightly scared. i would suggest that even if you can't tame the bird entirely by yourself, be a part of the training so you know how it was trained and the bird will know you. if the bird does bite you. even though it will hurt like h**l, DON'T pull your hand away. the bird will gain a little dominace and it will be even harder to gain it's trust. when the bird releases, blow in it's face and say "no" then tap him lightly on the beak. NEVER swat your bird. that's the fastest way to turn him against you. if he goes after your finger, lift it straight up over his head and wait for him to calm down and try touching his beak. keep doing this until he stops. it sounds weird, but it works.

  3. Well, even though it would be better for YOU to tame it, I would ask someone in the family who is older then 8 years old and can be trusted around pets. I have two cockatiels, and my one named Pete had been tamed by someone else and was still good.

  4. There is no guarantee. Some birds dislike a gender. If your trainer is male and you are female, that may be enough for the bird to dislike you.

If you want to ensure the bird being tame for you, arrange with your trainer for you to be present during some, if not all, of the training. Your bird will be used to you and you will learn how to act around it and how to treat it properly.

Also, tame animals (especially birds) require a lot of attention. Be sure you have the time to devote to the cockatiel to be sure it feels loved every day.

  5. It's best to tame it yourself. But what makes all the difference in the world, is to buy the cockatiel as a baby (6 weeks old or so) from a good breeder.  The Breeder, unlike petstore employees, will hold their birds, and give them much better personal care that will go a LONG way into helping your cockatiel become tame. I got my own cockatiels from a breeder while the cockatiels were very young, and they were sitting on my shoulder the next day. (Plus, the birds from a breeder are around $75 vs. something much more expensive from a petstore.)
