Indiana Fever bounced back from a defeat to the New York Liberty on Friday night and dominated them down the stretch to carve out an 86-80 victory on Saturday night at the Prudential Center. Fever scored the last nine points of the game.
Forward Tamika Catchings led Fever with 19 points, four assists, and three steals. She shot 7-for-10 from the field and a perfect 4-for-4 from free throw line.
Guard-forward Katie Douglas lit the lamp with 17 points, four assists, and four rebounds while Jeanette Pohlen came off the bench with 14 points, shooting a 4-for-4 from three-point range. Essence Carson had a game-best 23 points on a 7-for-15shooting from the field for New York.
Forward-centre Plenette Pierson added 16 points and six boards while Nicole Powell and guard Cappie Pondexter added 13 points each for Liberty.
Last night at Indianapolis, New York headed Indiana by as much as 18 points in the third quarter but they got loose in the fourth quarter and Fever made a comeback and cut the deficit to just one with 23 seconds to go in the fourth quarter. Cappie Pondexter however handled the situation and nailed a game-winning jumper with just eight seconds left to give her team the one-point victory.
However tonight, they failed to win despite leading the Fever 80-77 with just 02:59 to go in the game. They could not stop the Fever in the last two minutes, providing them with an opportunity to score nine consecutive points.
Fever coach Lin Dunn acknowledged the team contribution by her players in the comeback victory and said, "I thought they stole a game from us last night." "At home we should have won that ballgame. So we were real focused tonight to try to come in here and steal one back from them."
Fever jumped out to an 8-4 lead early in the first quarter but New York pulled back and held a 27-24 lead with 01:50 to go in the quarter. Indiana then scored the last five points of the first frame and carried a 29-27 advantage into the second.
New York came out hot in the second quarter as they outscored Fever 22-16, converting the two-point opening quarter deficit into a 49-45 lead at halftime.
Liberty maintained their hold and extended their lead to 70-57 later in the third quarter. However, the Fever went on a 5-0 run in the last two minutes of the third to cut the deficit to 70-62, heading into the fourth. In the fourth quarter, Indiana came out with determination and scored the first ten points of the quarter to knot the game at 72-72.
With 02:59 to go in the final buzzer, Vaughn’s lay-up put the Liberty ahead by 80-77. However, the Fever pulled the game away with a 9-0 flurry.
