Tamika Catchings stars as Indiana Fever edge past San Antonio Silver Stars 65-63 – WNBA Recap
Tamika Catchings scored a game-high 26 points as Indiana Fever beat San Antonio Silver Stars 65-63 on Tuesday night at AT&T Center enroute to their third consecutive victory. It was Silver Stars’ second straight loss, which dropped
one and half game behind Phoenix Mercury for the second position in the Western Conference.
Catchings, who is averaging 15.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game so far in this season, was the only player who reached the double figures for Fever. The 32-year-old player, who is a nine time All-Star, also grabbed five rebounds,
stole the ball for three times and blocked three shots. Catchings shot 9 for 15 from the field and 7 for 8 from free throw line on the night.
Jia Perkins came off the bench with 10 points, four rebounds and two steals to lead San Antonio. Guards Danielle Robinson and Scholanda Robinson also added 10 points each in the loss. San Antonio’s forward Sophia Young grabbed
a game best 13 rebounds in more than 35 minutes.
Becky Hammon, who was averaging 16.8 points and 5.6 assists coming into the game, was limited to just six points on 1 for 8 shooting from the floor.
Fever shot 39.3 percent (22 for 56) from the field and 89.5 percent (17 for 19) from free throw line. Silver Stars shot 35.5 percent (22 for 62) from the floor and 83.3 percent (15 for 18) from the line.
“We did not shoot the ball well, no one did,” San Antonio’s Hammon said after the game. “It was a rough, rough night from the floor.”
Indiana committed 15 turnovers while San Antonio committed 12. However the Silver Stars moved the ball better and dished out 16 assists as compared to just nine by the visiting team.
Indiana held a 21-16 lead at the end of the first quarter and stretched their lead to ten points, 43-33, at halftime. Silver Stars turned it on in the third quarter and outscored Fever 21-7, converting their deficit into a four-point
lead, 54-50 going into the last 10 minutes.
Indiana hit the ground running in the final frame and started with a 6-0 run to regain the lead at 56-54. San Antonio bounced back though and with 05:08 to go in the game, they tied the scores 58. Fever however dropped five consecutive
points in the ensuing passage to make it 63-58 and despite having some scares in the final minutes, hung tough to carve out a two point win.
