Tamim Iqbal - the Key for Bangladesh in the ICC World T20 2012 - Part 2 - Opinion

Continued from Part 1...

The format that he will find himself in however, is the fast paced, pocket sized version of the game, known as T20 cricket. He does seem well suited for this, as his aggressive style is bound to light up stadiums across the Emerald Isle. What acts in favor
of Bangladesh however, is that a batsman who combines his flamboyance with maturity, could easily win them games from precarious situations. Historically, Bangladesh’s failures in various ICC T20 competitions such as in 2010 and in 2009, were a product of
talented stroke makers such as Mohammad Ashraful playing reckless strokes, which resulted in batting collapses, and subsequent defeats. On the other hand, if a player like Tamim Iqbal is secure at the top of the order, then a strong sense of belief would automatically
permeate into the team. The calming effect he could have on a talented bunch of players is exactly what this team needs.

Iqbal is known for his big shots as well, which often delight the crowds. Very seldom could a bowler err in line and not be pounded off his willow in any format. Similarly, spinners who tend to bowl short or bowl wide outside the off stump are also punished
with impunity by Iqbal. His numerous innings for his country are often littered with towering sixes, and deliveries whistling off the bat for boundaries as well. In light of this, it is safe to say that Tamim Iqbal, along with Chris Gayle, Virat Kohli and
AB de Villiers, could be a detonator to look out for.

The weight of expectation on Tamim Iqbal’s shoulders is thus huge and he is undoubtedly a cricketer who carries the burden of millions of Bangladeshi fans. He is the most prized wicket for Bangladesh in contemporary times and for the opposition, dislodging
him or seeing the back of him could well and truly mean that they managed to push Bangladesh down the line. Tamim is also considered to be the best player in the lineup, in light of the fact that his fellow players are yet to mature into the realms and realities
of international cricket. Bangladesh is still one of the youngest sides to be contesting in this tournament, and could take this factor as an advantage. In truth however, Bangladesh just has a handful of players who are well established, which includes the
likes of Mashrafe Mortaza, Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan. Thus it becomes imperative for a player like Tamim to fire upfront, so that a solid foundation for the team can be laid. Only then can Bangladesh well and truly challenge their respective oppositions.

To put it simply, Iqbal is almost like a miniature version of India’s Virender Sehwag. If he blazes away at the start then he can single handedly help the Tigers win games from nowhere. However, if he gets out or falters under pressure, then alarm bells
could ring in the Bangladeshi camp. As a senior batsman however, and one of the hardest hitters of the cricket ball in modern times, Tamim Iqbal will undoubtedly be the key player for Bangladesh, as they hope to cause a few upsets in this year’s ICC World
T20. With a highest score of 69 not out and an average of nearly 21, few would doubt his credentials. It remains to be seen whether his potential truly materializes on the field. Millions of Bangladeshi fans would be praying that it well and truly does.
