Tamira Paszek bulldozes Julia Goerges in the first round – Rogers Cup 2012
World number 43, Tamira Paszek, stunned the 25th ranked German, Julia Goerges, in the opening round clash of the Rogers Cup on Tuesday. The 21-year-old Austrian trashed her opponent in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 to inch
a step ahead in Montreal, Canada.
It all came down to just an hour and eight-minute trip for the 23-year-old German beauty starlet at the hard courts of Montreal. It proved to be difficult for her coming from a long grass court season and adjusting to the new surface
in a span of just few days.
Goerges commenced the match with a serve hold. Paszek replied in with a cracking fashion; winning four points on the trot to register a serve hold to love. Both players held their serves in the following two games as well before
the lightning struck on the German superstar.
The 25th ranked German saved a breakpoint in the fifth game but couldn’t hold her opponent from winning a breakthrough on the second occurrence. The 43rd ranked Austrian held her serve and broke serve again
to lead the scores 5-2. With just one point for Goerges in the last game, the set was easily bagged by Paszek.
Goerges lost the breakpoint in the first game of the second set and went down to a trail of 1-3 in the meantime. She lost another breakpoint in the fifth game after saving two earlier and that helped her opponent to pile up a lead
of 4-1. A serve hold for Paszek made it 5-1 and the German lost four points on her serve to give up the fight.
In a post-match interview, Paszek commented about her next foe and stated, "I've played her a couple of times before and know her from juniors as well. She's the No.1 player in the world right now. She's a great competitor and
really tough to play against. But I had a good match against her in Wimbledon, and this is a new tournament, too. I feel great here, like home. I have great memories from 2008. I will try to enjoy it and give my best."
Tamira Paszek plays the top seed Victoria Azarenka in the next encounter.
