Tamira Paszek crushes So-Ra Lee to reach quarters – KDB Korea Open 2012
Austrian challenger, Tamira Paszek, slaughtered the local wild card entrant, So-Ra Lee, with a bagel at the KDB Korea Open Tennis Championship 2012 on Thursday. She penned down a 6-2, 6-0 success against the 18-year-old to charge into the final eight at
this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) International-level tournament taking place in Seoul, South Korea.
The 21-year-old showed brilliant tennis to overpower Lee in their first encounter. After registering this success, the Austrian took a 1-0 lead in the head-to-head series against the South Korean and advanced into the quarter-finals at this outdoor hard
court event.
Paszek thundered into the Seoul Olympic Park Tennis Center. She failed to block the lone breakpoint she faced but cashed in all three break chances to pull out the opener with a 6-2 score line.
Ranked 35th in the WTA Premier Rankings, Paszek went out of control in the following set. She blasted powerful groundstrokes to reel off six games in a row. The Austrian swiped her entire serves without encountering any breakpoint and capitalised
on three out of four break chances, eventually sealing the set with a bagel.
All in all, the Austrian starlet produced a poor first serve share of 53 per cent in contrast with her opponent’s 70 per cent but brilliantly marked 14 out of 18 points on it.
Up next for Paszek is the sixth seed, Varvara Lepchenko, who devastated the Spanish veteran, Anabel Medina Garrigues, with a breadstick to reach this spot.
The seventh seed, Klara Zakopalova, will join Paszek in the final eight.
"I just love coming back here," the Czech star stated in a court-side interview after clinching the match. "The people here are so nice and I have many fans here. I don't know why - maybe it's because I've played well here. The hard courts here are great
and I love playing on them."
Zakopalova was broken twice but cashed in all five break opportunities to formulate a 6-1, 7-6(6) score line against Slovakia’s Magdalena Rybarikova. The Czech veteran coughed more unforced errors but manifested a better first serve share of 56 per cent
as opposed to her rival’s 43 per cent.
