Tamira Paszek ousts Ashley Weinhold to reach the second round – Bell Challenge 2011
World number 40, Tamira Paszek of Austria, made her way to the second round of Bell Challenge, defeating the American qualifier, Ashley Weinhold, in the opening round on Tuesday night.
The contest was staged on the hard courts of Quebec, Canada, with the third seeded Austrian registering her 31st victory of the running WTA (Women’s Tennis Association). Paszek concluded the match at 6-0, 4-6, 6-2, taking one hour and fifty four minutes to qualify for the second round of the $220,000 WTA tournament.
It was an enthralling game of tennis, with a number of momentum swings being witnessed. Paszek completely blew away her American opponent in the opening set to get one up early but lost her way in the second set to let Weinhold back in business. The American qualifier pocketed the second set to bring Paszek back on even terms again but lost her momentum in the final set to finish the contest on the losing side.
The contest was stuffed with enthralling high quality tennis action, with both contestants exchanging a number of serve breaks and assertive winner throughout the game. Weinhold cashed in five of her eight break opportunities in the matchup, while Paszek excelled over her with nine crushing break point conversions en route to victory.
The opening set was an all-Paszek show, with tremendous power hitting from the Austrian to take the early advantage in the game. The third seed nailed three successive serve breaks right away to rocket away to 6-0, taking the opening set in just 25 minutes of play.
Weinhold came out firing at her opponent in the following set, registering four serve breaks to stun the third seeded Austrian. Paszek replied three break point conversions but failed to hold the set, losing it to the American at 4-6.
Tide turned in the final set once again, with the third seed Paszek nailing three more serve breaks to conclude victory at 6-2. She will take on the American contestant, Varvara Lepchenko, in the next round for a place in the quarter-finals of the Bell Challenge.
