Tamira Paszek outguns Caroline Wozniacki in the first round clash – Wimbledon Championships 2012
Newly ranked world number 37, the Austrian tennis prodigy, Tamira Paszek, put up yet another stunning display of tennis to outlast the former world number one, Caroline Wozniacki, in the opening round of the Wimbledon Championships
on Wednesday. The 21-year-old pulled up an absolute stunner on the grass courts of the All England Club and disposed of the world number seven in a three-set thriller, 5-7, 7-6(4), 6-4, to reach the second round of the Grand Slam event.
The Austrian youngster came to London directly after winning a grass-court championship title in Eastbourne and has carried on her winning ways at Wimbledon to register one of the biggest upsets of the tournament so far. Paszek
was expected to perform well after her emphatic triumph in Eastbourne against the world number eight, Angelique Kerber of Germany, but no one anticipated her to overthrow Wozniacki in the very first round. She was extremely delighted on her tremendous start
to the Grand Slam campaign and hopes to continue her sublime run further in the tournament.
On the other hand, the seventh seeded Dane was struck by sheer disappointment after suffering yet another early exit from a Major tournament. Wozniacki came to Wimbledon to end her Grand Slam title drought but was denied once again
by an inferior ranked opponent in the very first round. She was on top of Paszek at one moment and earned a match point in the second set but couldn’t deliver the final blow, eventually finishing on the losing side in the end.
"I had one match point where I didn't hit bad shots and she twice hit the line," Wozniacki said. "It's all about doing the right things at the right time. Winning Eastbourne, she believed in herself. She went for it, and that's
it."
Wozniacki squandered off 15 break opportunities and converted just seven in the contest, whilst the unseeded Austrian cashed in seven out of her 10 vital chances to come out as the deserving winner. She banged in 54 winners in
the match compared to Wozniacki’s mere 31 and kept winning the crucial points to reach the second round of the star-studded event in London.
"There are some matches it's really great to win, but also really suck to lose," Wozniacki said afterwards. "And this one especially after having two match points and not taking them, it's not a nice feeling. It was a good match
and good tennis, but that doesn't really help me. I still lost in the first round today.
Paszek will play against Alize Cornet of France in the second round.
