Tamira Paszek plonks Camila Giorgi to breeze into round two – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
Austrian star, Tamira Paszek, trounced the Italian youngster, Camila Giorgi, in straight sets at the Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012 on Monday. She juggled up a 6-4, 6-3 success against the Italian challenger to charge into the second round at this WTA (Women’s
Tennis Association) Premier Five event held in Tokyo, Japan.
Paszek stayed on track to bid for her second year-to-date title after triumphing over the French resident in their first encounter. After recording the victory in one hour and 41 minutes, the Austrian took lead in the head-to-head series by 1-0 against Giorgi
and secured a spot in the round of 16 at this outdoor hard court event.
The 21-year-old comfortably entered the Ariake Coliseum. She drew the first blood in the third game and leaped to a 3-1 lead. Paszek held her composure afterwards and smoothly bagged her remaining serves, eventually sealing the opener by winning six games
to four. She superbly warded off all seven breakpoints she came across and converted one out of five break chances to her advantage.
Ranked 32nd in the WTA Premier Rankings, Paszek kept momentum floating in the following set. She broke the Italian’s serve again in the third game and jumped to a 3-1 lead. The Austrian held her remaining serves with poise and capitalised on another
break chance in the last game, eventually clicking the set with a 6-3 win. She dusted away both breakpoints she faced to keep her entire serves and cashed in two out of three break chances to her advantage.
On the whole, Paszek clobbered an equal first serve share of 49 per cent and impressively marked 21 out of 33 points on it. She also fully capitalised on nine double faults Giorgi committed and smacked two aces to prevail.
Next challenge for Paszek is the top seed, Victoria Azarenka from Belarus. The Belarusian number one received a first round bye after being the top eight players at this event.
Seeded 10th in this event, Caroline Wozniacki from Denmark will join the Austrian in the second round. The former world number one made quick in-roads and pulled out the opener with a bagel. Despite losing the following set, she remained focused
and carved out the victory with a 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 success.
She will face off the former world number five, Daniela Hantuchova who battled past Russia’s Ekaterina Makarova in a three-set thriller to set up this clash.
