Tamira Paszek’s winning impetus continues; reaches the quarter-final rounds – Wimbledon 2012
21-year-old Austrian tennis prodigy, Tamira Paszek, is currently rocking the tennis world with her eye-startling performances for the last two weeks and has booked a place in the quarter-final draw of the Wimbledon Championships. Breaking into the top-40 after last week, Paszek devastated the world number 23, Roberta Vinci, in the fourth round of the Grand Slam event on Monday, settling the final score line at 6-2, 6-2.
The Austrian youngster has been absolutely ballistic during the recent two weeks and has registered a number of upset victories against superior ranked contestants. She was having a pathetic winning record of 2-13 before stepping into the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) grass court season at Eastbourne. She beat all the odds to end her title drought by lifting the AEGON International trophy and continued with her sublime run at the All England Tennis and Croquet Club. She gained lime light by disposing of the seventh seeded Dane contender, Caroline Wozniacki, in straight sets in the opening round of the Wimbledon Championships.
Her win over Vinci was already anticipated, as the Italian is also going through a slum of form this season. She is yet to bag a championship title and is giving a 24-16 winning record till date. Vinci was facing the Austrian for the second time in her career and her sloppy game play took her 0-2 down against her in the head-to-head series. Paszek defeated the Italian two years ago at Hobart, 6-4, 6-3, but it was far comprehensive victory for her on Monday afternoon. She spared just four games for Vinci before annihilating her in twin sets to reach the round of eight.
Paszek’s 73 per cent precise first serve included merely two aces but she secured 23 out of 37 points on it to take the better of her opponent. The Austrian crafted a total of eight break opportunities in the matchup but six conversions proved sufficient for her to drive the 29-year-old Italian veteran out of the mega event with authority. She belted 19 winners en route to victory, whilst Vinci came up with just eight to finish on the losing side in the end.
Paszek will take on the former world number one and this year’s Australian Open champion, Victoria Azarenka, in the quarter-final round on Tuesday. The second seeded Belarusian is in prime form this season and a perfect example was witnessed in her fourth round encounter. She brutally demolished the former world number one, Ana Ivanovic of Serbia, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0, to book a date with Paszek.
