Tampa Bay Buccaneers OC Mike Sullivan wants QB Josh Freeman to make smart decisions on field - NFL News
Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, Josh Freeman regressed considerably in the last campaign.
Before that in 2010-11 Freeman was one of the rising stars of the National Football League (NFL) as he passed for 3,451 yards completing 61.4% of his passes and setup 25 touchdown passes to help the Bucs end the season with a 10-6 record.
It was expected that Freeman would go from strength to strength in the next season and help the Buccaneers challenge for the National Football Conference (NFC) South division championship.
However, like the entire franchise the quarterback underperformed and Tampa Bay lost all of its last 10 games to end up with a 4-12 record.
The poor showing last season led the owners to fire head coach, Raheem Morris and his entire coaching staff while they brought in the untested Rutgers coach, Greg Schiano.
Schiano hired New York Giants offensive coordinator, Mike Sullivan, for the same role at the Buccaneers and the new offensive coordinator has found the problem that troubled Freeman throughout the last campaign.
Speaking in a radio interview, Sullivan talked about Freeman’s declining production last year.
According to NFL.com he said that they are working on the quarterback’s decision making in training to help Freeman make smart decisions during games.
"When an incompletion is not only OK, but it's a good thing. When a sack is not only OK, it's a good thing. It's all about protecting the football and making those smart decisions."
Freeman will be under pressure to perform this year to his full potential as Tampa Bay have added some big names to the offence to take the pressure off from the quarterback.
Last year, the quarterback passed for only 16 touchdowns and was intercepted 22 times.
This year though all eyes will be on Freeman to become the team leader and deliver big plays on offence as Tampa Bay is targeting to reach the playoffs.
"I think with the quarterback position, regardless of the system, regardless of style of play, it really comes down to those three key variables: leadership, decision-making and accuracy,"
The quarterback has to work on all three if he wants to help the Bucs end with a winning season this year and he will have time during the offseason to work on his game.
