Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB LeGarrette Blount feels competition for spots will bring out his best
Tampa Bay Buccaneers running back, LeGarrette Blount had an up-and-down season in 2011-12. He started off the campaign well much like the rest of the team but his mistakes and turnovers kept on piling as the season wore on.
The Buccaneers ended last season with a poor 4-12 season but this year the team has made some big additions in the free agency and drafts to shore up the roster and challenge for the playoffs.
With just Blount and Mossis Madu available in the roster at the position, Tampa Bay were likely to add more reinforcements through the draft.
Blount in an earlier interview was not too pleased that the Buccaneers might draft a running back through the drafts.
The Bucs did get a running back as they picked up Boise State University’s Doug Martin 31st overall.
Blount on Tuesday in an interview with the St. Petersburg Times though changed his mind and said that the increased competition will get the very best out of him.
"I had the idea they were going to draft another guy. I've been showing I can be an every-down back ... them drafting a running back might be what I needed to become an every-down back.''
Adding further the burly running back said that Martin’s arrival would not reduce his carries and only his performance on the training field will affect how much game-time he gets.
"They drafted him because we needed him. But at the end of the day, we're both going to play. Don't nobody affect my carries but me, not what he does, not what anybody else does, just how I practice and how fast I get the offense down pat and everything
like that. That's the only thing that will affect my carries."
Tampa Bay this year have been heavily active in the free agency and with Schiano at the helm the franchise are targeting to become relevant in the league once again.
They would need Blount to be at his rampaging best to achieve that and the player will have to cut down on his ball drops if he is to help the Bucs make a challenge for the playoffs once again.
