Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano discusses game plan for new season - NFL News
Tampa Bay Buccaneers surprised everyone after the 2011-12 season as they ended a long winding search for a new head coach by hiring Rutgers coach, Greg Schiano.
The new arrival maybe relatively inexperienced in the National Football League (NFL) than some of the other candidates interviewed for the job however, Schiano has ideas on how he will make his team play.
The ex-Rutgers coach who went with a Pro-style offence at his college team and disregarded the spread offence popular among the other franchises is going different once again in the NFL.
Speaking to the Tampa Bay Times Schiano said that he will prefer running and punting rather than the pass heavy game we have witnessed over the last year.
"I do believe at times the best way to play is keep-away, especially with the quarterbacks we have in our division,"
Adding further he said.
"Punting is okay. We have a great punter (Michael Koenen). Scoring drives, they may be one series, they may be two series, they may be three series. If you punt the ball and get the ball back in better position, the drive just continues and you put it in
the end zone."
The head coach had recently brought wide receiver Vincent Jackson to give quarterback Josh Freeman some new weapons to target but it seems that option will be used much less as the coach concentrates on the running game.
Schiano added in the interview that he will increase passing when he has the players and resources to carry it out and will likely mix both running and passing this season.
“So we'll throw it around when we have the guys to do it and when you have the quarterback to do it. I think it'll be a good mix."
The Buccaneers ended up 4-12 in 2011-12 as the franchise lost its last 10 games in a row.
Coach Raheem Morris was fired as soon as the season ended as the owners looked for a new approach for a team suffering from lack of discipline.
Schiano’s arrival and his moves in free agency show that Tampa Bay means business this year and will give their division rivals a run for their money in 2012-13.
