Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano warns RB LeGarrette Blount over mistakes - NFL News
New Tampa Bay Buccaneers coach Greg Schiano is looking to turnaround the franchise and return it back among the elite of the National Football League (NFL).
Schiano though has no qualms about laying into his players and in an interview with the
Tampa Bay Times praised running back LeGarrette Blount’s abilities but also warned him to control his fumbles or risk losing his starting berth.
Blount last season was woeful like the rest of the Buccaneers as the team went on to lost ten straight games in a row.
The burly running back fumbled the ball five times last season and that statistic is what concerns Schiano more about his young running back.
Schiano told the newspaper on Wednesday that.
"I think LeGarrette has tons of ability. No one who touches the football will get touches if they don't protect the football. That is one of our core covenants -- the ball. It's so important they named the game after it. We make a big deal about it.”
Blount rushed for a total of just 781-yards from 184 attempts and scored five-touchdowns in the 2011-12 season.
The Buccaneers own the fifth pick in the first round for this April’s drafts and that puts them in pole position to draft Alabama’s talented running back Trent Richardson.
Richardson’s statistics in college are hugely impressive and Schiano heaped praise on the upcoming talent.
"I've studied a lot of tape on (Richardson). He's a very talented guy. I met him briefly. I look forward to spending more quality time with him here before the draft. You can't argue with production.”
Adding further Schiano said.
“Trent has done it in what's arguably the toughest league in college football. So he's a special talent."
The Buccaneers ended the 2011-12 season in one of the worst fashions possible. The franchise lost all of its last 10 games which led to the sacking of coach, Raheem Morris, from the job.
Tampa Bay surprised everyone with the hiring of Schiano as many expected the Bucs to go for a more experienced coach.
Schiano though has been making all the right noises and some big moves in free agency have already created huge excitement among fans for the new season.
