Tampa Bay Buccaneers give big statement of intent with three signings in free agency - NFL News
Tampa Bay Buccaneers sent a statement of intent to the rest of the franchises in the National Football League (NFL) after signing three of the best players available in free agency.
The Buccaneers are looking to build a competitive team for new head coach Greg Schiano and went on a spending spree in free agency taking full advantage of their mammoth salary cap space.
On Wednesday, The Buccaneers made two huge splashes as they signed New Orleans Saints guard, Carl Nicks, on a five-year deal worth $ 47.5 million and followed it up with signing Detroit Lions cornerback, Eric Wright, on a $ 37.5 million deal for five years.
Just a day earlier, the franchise announced the signing of wide receiver, Vincent Jackson, on a new five-year contract worth $ 55.55 million.
The last two days have been busy for general manager, Mark Dominik, who has overseen Tampa Bay’s $ 140 million spending spree as he looks to recharge a roster that was one of the worst on offence and defence in the previous season.
The general manager also said that the three signings were the only free agents they would sign and will now turn their eyes on April’s draft where Tampa Bay holds the first rounds fifth pick.
"Our eyes are turned toward the draft, we’ve made our mark for what we wanted to accomplish."
Greg Schiano in a press conference with his three new players looked pleased and said that they were the perfect fit for his plans to remake the Buccaneers into an elite team.
"I think they're a perfect fit ... for what we want to do,"
With all three players being some of the best in their positions and with their new contracts all eyes and cameras will be on them to see how they impact what is a young Buccaneers team.
Jackson believes that the franchise has the building blocks for a great future and they will be looking to deliver.
"They have the tools here to do big things. I'm just looking to do my part.
While Nicks is aware that their big contracts coupled with high reputations will lead to more intense scrutiny from the media and fans.
"We're not the Big 3 like the Miami Heat. But hey ..."
Hopefully for the Buccaneers their new signings could help the franchise put in some better performances than the ones they delivered last year after losing 10 straight games.
