Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano allays fan concerns over his offseason signings - NFL News
By now every Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan knows which players new head coach, Greg Schiano likes and the answer is that he prefers his former players from Rutgers University.
The Buccaneers have this offseason signed at least five players from Rutgers University and this trend is raising concerns among Tampa Bay fans who believe that the coach might prefer his former players to start games to the detriment of the franchise.
Schiano though in an interview with the Tampa Bay Times sought to allay those concerns and said that what is in the team’s interest will always come first and he won’t let his past relationships with former players cloud his judgement.
“Some of the guys that I’m very familiar with, if they’re available and I think they have a chance to help us, (we’ll sign) but my previous relationships will never cloud my vision on what’s best for the Buccaneers. And that’s exactly what I share with them.
‘Look, I want you to be here. I want to see if it can work. I appreciate your skills and your work ethic.'”
He is familiar with many of the players and their strengths as they work out and showcase their talents during the rookie minicamp.
It seems that the former Rutgers coach is looking to keep players who he is familiar with so that they can help him implement the kind of structure he wishes to install in the team.
Adding further the coach said.
“But at the end of the day, I have one responsibility, and that’s to the Buccaneers. So I’m going to do what’s best for them. As long as everybody understands that going in -- not that it’s easy when you have to tell somebody they can’t work here anymore
-- that’s the way it is."
Hopefully the new head coach will deliver on the expectations that the Tampa Bay fans have about the upcoming seasons.
Last year they suffered from a poor display by the team which ended up with a 4-12 record after losing all of its final 10 games.
Such a result once again does not look likely as the franchise has made some astute signings in free agency and it will be interesting to see the new look Bucs side.
