Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano "excited" to coach DT Gerald McCoy - NFL News
Tampa Bay Buccaneers will complete the rebuilding of their team after the drafts on April 26. The franchise has had a busy free agency period as they signed three top players to give the roster some much needed leadership.
However, they will also gain another important player at tackle when Gerald McCoy returns from injury and takes part in the team’s Organised Team Activities (OTAs) and training camp.
McCoy missed much of the 2011-12 season after tearing his right biceps and was not able to participate for the rest of the season as Tampa Bay ended up with a horrendous 4-12 record.
The defensive tackle is considered one of the best talents in the league when not injured and new head coach, Greg Schiano cannot wait to start working with him.
Speaking to the Tampa Bay Times on Sunday he said.
"I'm excited to coach Gerald. He plays defensive tackle the way I like. He comes off the ball with a flat back, he's a penetrating guy who can change direction. We've got to get him back healthy and keep him healthy. I think he can be a dominant force if
we can just get some miles underneath him, some plays."
The defensive tackle has played just 19 games since joining the franchise in 2010 and has suffered injuries to both his biceps which has stopped his development.
Tampa Bay were 4-2 in the first six weeks as McCoy started all games. However, the defensive tackle went down with the injury ending his season and the Bucs season went off the rails.
With McCoy missing the Buccaneers ended up boasting one of the worst defences in the league and failed to win a single game in the rest of the ten games.
Now hopefully he can remain healthy and help a new look Bucs side push for the playoffs under coach Greg Schiano.
Tampa Bay have the fifth overall pick in this month’s drafts and will likely move for either running back, Trent Richardson or cornerback Morris Claiborne to shore up the team.
It is an exciting time for any Buccaneers fan as the team looks intent of ending its mediocrity in the new season.
