Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Greg Schiano working on basics in training - NFL News
Last year the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defence suffered from a host of problems as they ended the regular season as one of the worst defences in the league.
Their poor performance in 2011-12 got head coach, Raheem Morris, sacked from his job and his replacement, Greg Schiano, inherited a team that was shot of confidence and needed a lot of work on its technique.
That is the exact same thing that Schiano is now trying to improve with large portions of his practices dedicated to improving the basics of his players.
Speaking to the Tampa Bay Tribune, defensive tackle, Gerald McCoy said that the concentration on basics is great for the team as it allows them to hone their technique.
He also said that he is just now learning to tackle thanks to Schiano and it will help him improve greatly in the upcoming 2012-13 season.
"We do a tackling circuit before every practice, and I've never done anything like that before. I realize now that, before, I was just playing football. Now, I'm really learning how to tackle and I think it's going to help me a lot."
This attention to detail is what sets Schiano apart from previous Bucs coaches and the team desperately needed an injection of basic training to help them deliver better numbers in the 2012-13 season.
Cornerback, Eric Wright also talked about the training regimen under the new head coach.
"You have to brush up on your fundamentals; there's no question about that, because you have to have a fundamental base to go with the talent you have. I think it's something that's necessary and I'm glad we're doing it and doing it every day. Other teams
do it, but not on a consistent basis. We do it every day here, and I think it's a good thing."
The Buccaneers last year lost all of their last 10 games under Morris and ended up with a poor 4-12 regular season record.
This time though the franchise is feeling much more optimistic about its prospects and fans are looking forward to see their team put up a strong challenge for the playoffs.
