Even millionaire former football players can run out of money if they don’t handle their finances smartly. That reality came down on Super Bowl winner and former Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Warren Sapp who filed for Chapter seven, bankruptcy, in
Florida on Saturday.
Sapp who retired from playing after the 2007 season is currently working as an analyst for the National Football League (NFL) Network. The former player currently earns around $ 115,881 per month which includes $ 45,000 from his contract with Showtime and
$ 48,000 for an appearance with CCA Sports.
The 39-year-old’s contract with the NFL Network is set to expire in August and is not likely to be renewed.
According to papers filed with the court the former Buccaneer owes a total of $ 6.7 million to creditors and in child support.
He also has lost his Super Bowl ring according to the documents filed.
The former NFL star is a legend at Tampa Bay who he helped to win the Super Bowl title in 2002. Sapp spent nine seasons with the Buccaneers before moving on to join the Oakland Raiders in 2004.
After four seasons with the Raiders and declining productivity the tackle retired from the game.
Sapp played 198 games during his 13-year career and made 569 tackles in his entire career. He also made 96.5 sacks during his career and forced 19 fumbles.
The 39-year-old has a total of three touchdowns to his name.
According to TMZ.com the former defensive tackle also listed all his assets in the filing which included 240 pairs of sneakers, a large nude painting of a woman, Lion skin rug, Nike golf clubs, De Grisogono watch, and a Muhammad Ali signed boxing glove.
Sapp helped the Buccaneers win their first and only Super Bowl title to date in 2002. The Buccaneers faced Oakland Raiders in the final which was played at the Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.
The Buccaneers defeated Oakland 48-21 in the final which had the third lowest attendance in the history of the league with just  67,603 fans showing up for the show piece event.
Sapp though has lost the ring he won in that game according to his papers.
