Tampa Bay Buccaneers react to hiring of Greg Schiano as new head coach - NFL News
Tampa Bay Buccaneers have hired Greg Schiano as their new head coach and reactions from players and management have been heavily positive.
Buccaneers tight end Kellen Winslow is happy with the new appointment and feels that he will be a great coach for the side but made his disappointment known that the franchise did not go for Carolina Panthers offensive coordinator Rob Chudzinski for the
job.
Winslow, who played for Chudzinski when he was at Cleveland Browns before joining Tampa Bay, wanted the offensive coordinator to be given the job.
"I was really hoping for coach Chudzinski, who I was with at Miami and Cleveland,” Winslow said.
"But, you know, we got another guy in Greg Schiano who I know and heard he’s one of the best coaches people have been around. And he’s got a lot of enthusiasm and is real energetic so I’m excited, man."
He went on to stress that he was fine with the hiring of Schiano and will do his best to make the new coach’s time with the Buccaneers become successful.
Schiano’s hiring took many by surprise as the Buccaneers were looking at other names to take on the vacant head coach position after coach Raheem Morris was fired at the end of the 2011 regular season.
The new Buccaneers coach joins the franchise after a hugely successful stint as head of Rutgers University football team, Scarlet Knights.
The Buccaneers had already offered the role to Rose Bowl winning Oregon University Coach Chip Kelly but he refused the offer citing that he still had lots to achieve at Oregon.
Schiano who takes over a side that has lost its last ten regular season games has a tough task ahead of him.
In a statement to the press Schiano said that it was the right time to move on to a new challenge and he was happy with signing for the Buccaneers.
"I’ve had several opportunities over the years -- some of them you know about, some of them you don’t know about -- and none of them felt right," He said. "This time, this one felt right."
Tampa Bay fired coach Raheem Morris as well as the entire coaching staff after the team went 4-12 in the 2011-12 season losing their last ten games and showcasing some of the most undisciplined performances witnessed in the National Football League (NFL).
The franchise owned by the Glazer family will now hope that their new coach delivers on his promise and return the Bucs back among the elite of the NFL.
