Tampa Bay Derby winner Prospective turned in 5 furlongs ahead of his next start
Trained by Mark E. Casse for owner John C. Oxley 3-year-old colt, Prospective, is back on the work tab for his owner and trainer after a spectacular win in the Grade 2 Tampa Bay Derby at about 1 1/16 miles on 10 March, 2012, over at Tampa Bay Downs’ dirt course, where he defeated a pretty good lineup, and outlasted the likes of Golden Ticket in second and Cozzetti in third, while covering the distance in 1 minute and 43.35 seconds.
A stakes winner prior to the Tampa Bay Derby, Prospective never finished worse than second except the only blemish at Churchill Downs when he finished an uncharacteristic 13th on the day in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile last November against a lineup which he will go up against in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby if he can survive the rigorous trail.
The Kentucky bred son of Malibu Moon, out of mare Spirited Away by Awesome Again, Prospective turned in another great work ahead of his next start at Churchill Downs, when he breezed five furlongs in 1 minute and 3 seconds on 27 March, 2012, as the workout was conducted on a fast main track of the venue.
Under regular rider Melanie Giddings, Prospective went out early when the track opened, and his work was broken down into fractions with 14 1/5 seconds, 27 seconds for the quarter mile, 39 1/5 seconds, 51 3/5 seconds and then he galloped out six furlongs to close the work in 1 minute and 16.40 seconds.
“The work went very well,” assistant trainer Norman Casse said. “We’re excited that he’s become much more professional in his works. He was on the bridle the whole way and galloped out very nicely. He seems to be maturing physically and mentally at the right time.”
Prospective in the new campaign is 2 wins out of 3 starts, with a second place finish in the Grade 3 Sam F. Davis Stakes to winner, Battle Hardened, over a distance of 1 1/16 miles also at Tampa Bay Downs on 4 February, 2012, as the winner covered the distance in 1 minute and 44.58 seconds, as Reveron finished third.
